Shoes for packing light?
« : August 25, 2010, 05:23:26 AM »

Any advice on a good pair of all around shoes? Something I could wear for an Hike and out to a bar at night, I had the Vibram 5 fingers for almost 3 years now, and I have used them for all sort of things, but the fact that they don`t do well when wet is a big problem for me, I want something that keeps me dry, any ideas?

I only wear huaraches from invisibleshoe.com. FFs are gone, although I may check out the smartwool ones. If you can get into the bar they'll do you a lot more good than regular "cool" shoes, which no one will ever ask you about.

The five finger water issue is a problem for me too :( If they get wet, they stay wet for the whole day

Merrell's upcoming "Barefoot Collection" looks promising, though it's a long wait until February:

Do huaraches trip you up sometimes?  I found on my trip where i went everywhere with sandals that the sandals can get caught up on something, bend on the front and trip you up.  I almost fell on a hike on a steep mountain because of that, fairly dangerous.

I`m interested in the huaraches too, but as a second pair of shoes (for the beach, shower,...) to keep in the bag.

I have some options here, they are bulky but I would wear them most of the time while traveling:

Vasque Breeze Low GTX

this are not really waterproof

I bought a pair of New Balance MT101's today. Their original purpose is trail running, but they work  well for hiking and generally traveling. Less than eight ounces per shoe, relatively flat heel, thin sole; they're as minimalist as you can get with a conventional shoe. Probably too sportswear for a finer restaurant or club, but you got to compromise somewhere.
I'm using them for an upcoming adventure trip to Belize, and depending on their performance there I'm hoping they'll become the only pair of shoes I'll travel with (plus a pair of huarache sandals, I always need some kind of backup).
